In most states, you need to be licensed to adjust claims. The process, steps, and fees vary a bit by state but generally follow the same pattern. Get your home state, or Designated Home State (DHS) license if you live in a nonlicensing state. You need to take and pass your state adjuster exam, and submit a license application.
An adjuster’s income depends on how efficiently they work. Independent adjusters are paid a percentage per claim, and that rate varies based on experience, workload, employer, and demand. During major disasters like Hurricanes Harvey or Irma, demand spikes and pay increases—some adjusters can make $100,000 in a few months. But since this work is unpredictable, managing income during slow periods is key. The average annual salary is about $70,000. Top earners make closer to $100,000, while those who work less or decline assignments may earn around $40,000.
Your hours are reported to your state’s designated database, which you can access anytime. Just be sure to create an account and enter your license information first.
An independent adjuster works on behalf of insurance companies to assess claims. They are often contracted by insurers and may handle claims for multiple companies.
A public adjuster works on behalf of the policyholder, not the insurance company. They advocate for the insured to ensure a fair settlement.
